Before I taught science, I did it

I earned my B.S. in Marine Science and General Biology at CSU Monterey Bay, then spent a year as a research intern at the Pacific Shark Research Center in Moss Landing. I went on to earn a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems and Technology from the University of Southern California, and I worked for five years in the GIS lab at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

That background shapes how I teach. My students learn how science can be applied, not just what’s on the test.

Why I understand struggling with the material

I was never the student who understood everything right away. All through school, I had to find my own ways to make the material make sense. When I started substitute teaching and tutoring during graduate school, I realized that was my advantage: I knew exactly what my students were feeling, and I knew how to help them through it.

Teaching test prep around the world

After graduate school, I moved to Madrid, earned my TEFL certificate, and taught SAT, GRE, and GMAT prep to students from almost every continent, all of them preparing in their second language. While I was there, I designed the group test-prep course and built the content library every class used. That experience is the foundation of how I teach the Digital SAT today.

Delta Learning Space today

Since 2021, I’ve worked one-on-one with more than 50 students in California, Virginia, and New York. I also design NGSS-aligned science and math resources and free interactive tools like the Macromolecule Builder, and Delta Learning Space donates every month to DonorsChoose to fund STEM projects in public school classrooms.

My Story

I’m a trained scientist and tutor who helps high school students go further than school takes them in chemistry, biology, Algebra II, and the SAT.

I’m Lindsey Gatlin, and my students know me as Ms. G or Teacher Lou. I founded Delta Learning Space in 2021, and I’m the one who teaches every session. When you work with me, you get me, every week, with a plan built around your student’s class and where they’re headed.

How I teach

Every session starts with the student: what they’re working on in class, where they’re stuck, and where they want to go next. Some students come to me to catch up. Many come because school isn’t challenging them enough. Either way, the goal is the same: real understanding of the content, and the confidence to keep going on their own.

I also believe students need room to get things wrong. Learning isn’t a straight line. Working through a mistake is how understanding sticks, so my sessions are a place where it’s safe to try, miss, and try again. Because confidence is everything.
